About Me
I'm Jessica Sawyers,
founder of The Exceptionally Ordinary Life blog, and I am super excited to have you here!
Before you dive in, I’d like to share a few tidbits of who I am with you so you can get to know me a bit better. For example, my given name is Jessica, but all my friends call me Jess, and since I am hoping to become your new online friend, I want you to call me that as well 😉
Now, friend, if you’d please scroll down a bit, you will find a few odd pieces about me, and even some crazy/cool/weird pics of me with my family!
First of, as most women, I have many roles in life. These roles include, but are not limited to:
- Wife to a wonderful man. Nope, he is not perfect, and drives me a bit crazier every day, but he is also THE best partner in crime I could've asked for. I guess you can say we are a team of 'boring' adults who love to relax & spend all of our free time together.
- Mom to three brilliant human monsters. Two of them are now college students & the youngest is in elementary school. Yes, they get on my last nerve frequently. Yes, I am beyond proud of all of them. And no, I would not change them for the world. They are wonderfully imperfect in every way.
- Mom to two monster cats. Our amazing, playful, needy, and often weird cats, Ginevra & Sparky, are the perfect furbabies for our family.
-
Grandma to a gorgeous grandkitty named Luna, a.k.a. Loony Bin/Raccoon Tail/Lunatic. She is a little ball of never-ending energy, all wrapped up in fur. And yes, her tail is extremely fluffy, and she kind of looks like a raccoon, hence one of her nicknames 😉
- Solopreneur: In addition to running this blog (which means a LOT of multitasking on its own), I'm also an Ebay seller, and create beautiful & helpful printables for my shop.
- And last, but not least, I am ME, and no one else can claim that. While I'm as imperfect as can be, I love myself & my life.
Now a few random facts...
- I am Puerto Rican, born & bread and extremely proud of it.
- I have a dark, sarcastic, self-deprecating humor side. Well, all my sides are the same.
- Some of my weaknesses are handmade/homemade things, graphic tees (or any other graphic item; really, I love it when my clothes/purse/anything 'speaks' for me), YA literature (particularly dystopian), and thrift store shopping.
- You would be hard pressed to find a bigger Harry Potter fan. I literally LIVE Harry Potter!
- Books are my thing. Like, I am a big time book-aholic, and not looking to quit anytime soon.
- Cooking is the one thing I hate the most about homemaking. Cleaning is a close second 😀
- While I'm not the most crafty or creative person, I enjoy finding little projects on Pinterest, and giving them a go. Even if they turn out hideous.
- Most people consider me a very serious person, at least at first, but my kids think I'm a hoot. Most of the time.
- I graduated college with a B.A. in Forensic Psychology that I have done absolutely nothing with. Can't say I regret it though; forensic psychology is a very interesting field.
- Many moons ago, I was a professional dancer. Nope, not a pole dancer, though that probably sounds way more fun. I trained with some amazing pros on ballet, flamenco, jazz, hip hop, contemporary & modern dance.
- Thanks to my Mom, I can understand, read, write & speak both English & Spanish fluently.
- I laugh hard & loud.
- The things that could make me cry are either inspiring, overflowing happiness, or when I'm raving mad.
- Although I tend to be shy at first, and don't make friends easily, when I do make a friend I keep it forever. In fact, the majority of the most important people in my life have been my friends for at least 20 years, and some for over 30 years. And I consider them family.
- I am fairly uncomplicated (I think) but have a horrible temper that mostly surfaces when someone is unfair to any of my loved ones. Or when I know I am right about something that really matters to me.
- The whole concept of boredom eludes me. No, seriously. I can't recall one single moment of boredom in my life; there's just so much to do in life!
Here are a few candid pictures of my family. Yes, I am the weirdo making a crazy face while holding the Azkhaban sign. No, I cannot bend over backwards to pick up a handkerchief anymore. Or maybe I can... I just don't think I can get back up after 😀
How I wish to be of help to you:
One of the biggest struggles in my life is with organization, which also affected my personal finances. Of all the things my Mom took care of teaching me right, being organized, and staying on budget was not one of them
As a result of that lack of organization, we often struggled and lived in a constant state of inner unrest. Don’t get me wrong: we were happy, and loved each other fiercely. But we were always messy (including our finances). No, I am not blaming my Mom for my own decisions. She was an amazingly loving and caring mother. I am just pointing out that oftentimes what we live as kids, bleeds into our adult lives. I know it did into mine, both the good and the bad.Â
Thru lots of struggles, headaches, lost tempers because of the less-than-ideal home organization, being late all. the. time., wasting money on takeout, and of course, bank overdrafts, I finally decided I have had enough. I by no means have a perfectly organized home & life. But I have learned quite a bit, enough to make our life not just doable and livable, but also enjoyable, and peaceful.Â
I would love nothing more than to have you join me in this learning adventure. Yes, learning, because what makes life wonderful and worth living is to always continue to learn, grow & improve ourselves and our spaces.
Lastly, if like me, you have been struggling with getting your family's finances in order, I have a little something to help you get started where you should: by talking to/with your family about money.
